Gunmen attacked the convoy of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on Wednesday, August 19, while allegedly targeting Nigerian singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, the Osun State Police Command has disclosed.
The incident occurred during the governor’s visit to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo shortly after he received his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Davido and the governor’s children were reportedly in the convoy when unidentified men opened fire, prompting the governor’s security personnel to engage them in a gun duel.
Confirming the incident, the police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said preliminary investigations showed that suspected members of the Eye Confraternity were allegedly after Davido.
Ojelabi said one Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, an ex-convict and suspected member of the Eye Confraternity, allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of his security team.
He said the confrontation attracted other suspected gang members in the area, who temporarily blocked the entrance to the palace and obstructed the movement of the governor’s convoy.
According to the police spokesperson, the suspected gang members later left the area but allegedly shot a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, at Itaolokan area of Osogbo.
“Upon receiving the information, the police immediately mobilised a patrol team to the scene, where the victim was found lying in a pool of blood. He was promptly rushed to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, for medical attention. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead by the doctors on duty,” Ojelabi said.
The command said it has commenced a full-scale investigation into the incident and intensified efforts to identify, apprehend and bring the fleeing suspects to justice.
